PAINT ROLLER CROSS-SECTION

Criteria for differentiation between rollers – selection of the best roller

paint roller covers

1.    synthetic fibres

•    Polyester – the cheapest covers are knitted from PE fibres (e.g. VESTAN, LIKELAN, etc.). The highest quality covers with specific characteristics are weaved (e.g. MICROSTAR®, KANALINE, etc.).

•    Polyacrylate – middle class covers are made of polyacrylate fibres. They are combed at their ends and have an erecting ability. These rollers are very pleasant to work with and their prices are very acceptable. Due to their properties, they can be used for rugged surfaces (e.g. coarse facades). KANACOLOR, BLUE STREAK, PERLAFLOR and KANAGREEN are among the best-known products of this group.

•    Polyamide – the royal class with top quality covers. Their superior properties and life will be most appreciated by professionals. Their prices are higher, but when calculated per one painted square meter, the price is surprisingly low, lower then the other covers. KANA deluxe, PINK-BLAU and DUALON are the best-known products of this group.

2.    Natural materials

– they were originally used on roller covers. Their quality and life are proven by long-lasting use. They show superior results and are very resistant. VELOUR, MOHAIR and SHEEPSKIN are the best-known products of this group.

3. KANAPOREN

– polyester foam.  More groups of foam are used. Higher weight per square meter represents higher quality. Quality foams contain a large amount of small bubbles and the resulting surface is more compact and smooth.  KANAPOREN rollers are either straight or shaped (around the roller’s perimeter or inside the roller – i.e. concave rollers).

4. FLOCK

•    It is a very popular kind of roller. It is represented by the KANAPOREN roller with many polyamide particles – flocks. It produces superior results and work with it is very pleasant and comfortable.

Roller sizes:

- choose a roller according to its application. Use a different roller for painting a room and a different roller for painting a façade of a family house. Similarly, a different roller will be used for enameling a garden bench and a different roller for hardwood floor.

Individual Criteria:

Core diameters
•    Large varnishing rollers are usually produced in standard 44 and 48 mm diameters.
•    Plasterboard rollers are usually produced in a standard 54 mm diameter.
•    Wall rollers are produced in a standard 44 mm diameter. Special sleeves, which increase the diameter to 53, 60 or 68 mm, are slipped over the body. They are made of special supple material, which does not pick up paint.
•    Small rollers are coiled around 17 and 30 mm bodies (allrounders).

Roller lenghts
•    5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 25, 27, 43 and 61 cm are standard roller lengths.

Roller cover naps
•    Naps range form 4 mm (varnishing rollers suitable for synthetic paints) to 22 mm (professional façade rollers).

Choice of a roller according to the used coating material

WORK WITH PAINT ROLLERS

BEFORE YOU START WORK
•    Wash the roller in soapy water before the first use.
•    Slide the roller onto the frame and roll it to remove excessive water. You can roll it against a sheet of old cardboard.
•    Now the roller is prepared for use.

DURING APPLICATION
•    Painting walls
1.    Keep the paint in a bucket with screen or in a tray.
2.    Dip only the bottom part of the roller and roll it against the screen or bottom of the tray.
3.    You can move the roller in various directions.

•    Varnishing
1.    Pour varnish or paint in a tray.
2.    Dip only the bottom part of the roller and roll it against the screen or bottom of the tray
3.    The best technique according to professionals is rolling in one direction and then “smoothing” the surface with a sideways roll.

AFTER FINISHING WORK

If you wish to use your KANA painting tools in the future, you should pay attention to their cleaning and maintenance.

1.  Generally, the best solvent for cleaning tools is the same, which you use for thinning    the paint. For water-based paints, it is water (best with soap or detergent) and for synthetic paints, you should use the appropriate thinner.

2.  Keep the roller suspended. If you keep it lying, the pile will become damaged and you will not be able to use it again.
